Margie Engle celebrated her 64th birthday by claiming the Overall Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider title on Thursday, March 31, during the final week of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
The Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, was presented weekly during WEF to the high-score female rider based on performances in that week’s WEF Challenge Cup and featured grand prix event. Consistent throughout the 13 weeks of competition, Engle of Wellington, FL, claimed the weekly Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady title during week 11. At the end of the WEF circuit, Engle had amassed a total of 970 points, putting her at the top of the leaderboard ahead of Lillie Keenan who was the runner-up with 727 points.
“It is a great honor,” said Engle who represented the U.S. at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. “I have not won the overall award in several years and there are a lot of top female athletes competing here. To be competitive with them is a great feeling. The horses feel really good and are performing well. They are jumping great and have been very consistent all circuit.
“I would like to thank Martha for sponsoring this award, as well as all of the people supporting me behind the scenes,” continued Engle who last won the Overall Leading Lady title in 2018. “I could not do it without the horses, grooms, sponsors, and owners who continue to support me. I’m so thankful to have a horse like Royce who takes care of me, and today gave me a great clear round as a birthday present in the WEF Challenge Cup.”
In recognition of her achievement, Engle will receive a custom-built jump from Jolicoeur.
“I like to sponsor the Leading Lady Rider Award because that was one of my favorite awards to win as a rider,” said Jolicoeur, who enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming one of Florida’s top Douglas Elliman real estate brokers. “After 12 years of sponsoring this title, I am very proud that Margie is not only a top contender, but also the overall winner. The award could not go to a nicer or more hardworking person. She is a great role model for women in the sport.”
While Engle scored the title once on her way to winning the Overall Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Award, other weekly winners during WEF 2022 included Heather Caristo-Williams, Lauren Balcomb, Zoe Conter, Alessandra Volpi, Chloe Reid, Adrienne Sternlicht, Amanda Derbyshire, Emily Moffitt, Ioli Mytilineou, and Lillie Keenan.
