Lillie Keenan claimed the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award on Saturday, March 19, during week 10 of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
Keenan of New York, NY, accumulated the highest number of points among all female athletes competing in the $75,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 10 on Thursday, March 17, and the $216,000 CSI4* Horseware Ireland Grand Prix held on Saturday evening, March 19. Keenan and her mount, Agana Van Het Gerendal Z, finished with one fence down for four faults in Thursday’s class and jumped double clear to earn fifth place on Saturday night under the lights in the International Arena.
“I think the leading lady award is one of the most valuable awards at the show because it is so important to support women in the sport,” said Keenan, 25. “Our sport is so unique because men and women compete on an even playing field, and it’s the only Olympic sport that is that way. I think it’s great that Martha supports the female riders.
“‘Aggie’ is a superstar,” continued Keenan of the 11-year-old Zangersheide stallion (Aganix du Seigneur x Topas) owned by Chansonette Farm LLC. “The only reason he doesn’t win every class is because of me getting in his way. In the WEF Challenge Cup he jumped his heart out, and I made a mistake. Tonight, in the Grand Prix, he honestly couldn’t have done any more for me. He is a stallion I’ve had since he was six years old and now he is 11 so we have a really strong partnership. He is the best partner, and I always say if he was a person, he would be my boyfriend. He is pretty special.”
In recognition of winning the Leading Lady Rider Award, Waverly Ernst of Martha’s Properties presented Keenan with a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, and a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Hunt, Ltd.
A long-time sponsor and dedicated supporter of horse sport at WEF for many years, 2022 marks Jolicoeur’s 12th season presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate broker.
Throughout WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, is presented each week to the female athlete who earns the most points in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup Series and grand prix events. During the final week of WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Overall Leading Lady Rider Award will be presented to the female rider who accumulates the most points throughout the 13-week circuit.
