Canadian Equestrian Team Veteran Jay Duke Offers Expert Clinic Services

Canadian Equestrian Team veteran Jay Duke, originally from Calgary, AB, is currently accepting bookings for 2017 and 2018 show jumping clinics throughout North America and beyond.

With 30 years of riding and training, Duke has extensive first-hand knowledge of the show jumping industry and now showcases and shares his methods as a clinician. Clinic packages range from one to four-day sessions with no minimum skill requirements.

“I truly enjoy working with riders and horses at every level of training because the basic principles of correct riding are the same whether you are a beginner or training for competition,” said Duke, who retired from the show ring in 2014 to focus on teaching and course designing. “Seeing improvement at every level is what is important, and I hope to help riders achieve just that with their horses, no matter what their end goal is.”

Duke grew up immersed in the horse business as his mother, Cheryl Anderson, is considered one of the top hunter/jumper trainers in Western Canada while his father, Fred Duke, is a national champion in roping and a member of the Canadian Cutting Horse Hall of Fame. Beginning his own riding career at the age of four, Duke quickly climbed the ranks and won four Canadian Junior Championship titles.

Internationally, Duke represented Canada on Nations’ Cup teams throughout North America, including at Toronto’s iconic Royal Horse Show as well as the Washington International Horse Show and the National Horse Show. He also earned top individual honors throughout his career, including the title of Leading Rider at the 1994 Spruce Meadows ‘North American’ tournament.

“I enjoyed a lot of success as a rider and my goal is to take the knowledge that I have gained after many years in the ring and utilize it to help the next generation of riders be the best they can be,” said Duke, 48. “I love the sport of show jumping whether I am in the ring or on the ground.”

A former medalist himself, Duke has coached several riders to medal-winning performances at the North American Young Riders’ Championships. In addition, he has had many top horses come through his program, including top high performance and hunter derby horse Mindful (formerly named Grappa), who Duke produced as a young prospect before U.S. competitor Kelley Farmer took over the reins.
