Alessandra Volpi claimed the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award on Saturday night, January 29, during week three of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
Volpi of Woodside, CA, accumulated the highest number of points among all female athletes competing in the $50,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 3 on Thursday, January 27, and the $216,000 NetJets Grand Prix CSI4* held on Saturday night, January 29. Riding Berlinda, Volpi jumped clear in the first round of Thursday’s class before earning a sixth-place finish on Saturday night under the lights in the International Arena.
“It feels incredible to win this,” said the 21-year-old Stanford University student. “This is my second year competing at WEF. Never did I think that I would be jumping double clear in a four-star grand prix and winning the Leading Lady Award. It is quite the experience and I’m very grateful for all of the people that have gotten me here.
“I’ve had Berlinda for just under a year now,” continued Volpi of her 14-year-old German Warmblood mare (Berlin x Gento). “She is absolutely incredible, and we get along really well. When I walked the course I was a little intimidated because I haven’t jumped many Saturday night classes here, and it walked as a very technical course. I went 18th in the class so I was able to watch other riders which is always nice because I can see exactly how those slightly confusing lines ride. She jumped great in the first round and her jump-off was also lovely.”
In recognition of winning the Leading Lady Rider Award, Jolicoeur and her husband, Dr. Stephen Norton, presented Volpi with a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, and a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Hunt, Ltd.
A long-time sponsor and dedicated supporter of horse sport at WEF for many years, 2022 marks Jolicoeur’s 12th season presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate broker.
Throughout WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, is presented each week to the female athlete who earns the most points in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup Series and grand prix events. During the final week of WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Overall Leading Lady Rider Award will be presented to the female rider who accumulates the most points throughout the 13-week circuit.
