Adrienne Sternlicht claimed the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award on Saturday evening, February 12, during week five of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL.
Sternlicht of Greenwich, CT, accumulated the highest number of points among all female athletes competing in the $75,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 5 on Thursday, February 10, and the $406,000 CSI5* Fidelity Investments Grand Prix held on Saturday, February 12. Sternlicht piloted Benny’s Legacy to victory in Thursday’s class before incurring a single time fault for ninth place on Saturday night under the lights in the International Arena.
“Last year I was fortunate enough to have one of the best strings of grand prix horses that I’ve ever had and this year I’m in a bit of a different situation, so to win this award during a five-star week means even more to me,” explained Sternlicht, 28, of earning the Leading Lady title. “I want to thank Martha for sponsoring this award year after year. It is incredibly prestigious and something that all female riders at the show aspire to win.
“I’ve had ‘Benny’ for about two and a half years,” continued Sternlicht of the 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Lupicor x Acordia) owned by Starlight Farms, LLC. “He is so special to me. Our partnership has really grown in the past six months, as he has been asked to step up to be my number one horse. He is my cup of tea to ride. Benny is a joy in every way, and I absolutely adore him. Any moment I spend with him I have fun. One of my goals for this season would be to win this award again because it means that you have been consistent, which is what our sport is all about.”
In recognition of winning the Leading Lady Rider Award, Jolicoeur and her husband, Dr. Stephen Norton, presented Sternlicht with a bottle of champagne, a bouquet of flowers, and a gift certificate for a shopping spree at Hunt, Ltd.
A long-time sponsor and dedicated supporter of horse sport at WEF for many years, 2022 marks Jolicoeur’s 12th season presenting the Leading Lady Rider Award. A former competitor herself, Jolicoeur enjoyed a successful international show jumping career before becoming Florida’s number one Douglas Elliman real estate broker.
Throughout WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, is presented each week to the female athlete who earns the most points in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup Series and grand prix events. During the final week of WEF, the Martha W. Jolicoeur Overall Leading Lady Rider Award will be presented to the female rider who accumulates the most points throughout the 13-week circuit.
